Pilates Explained

Pilates is a method of body conditioning that works differently to other fitness techniques. It targets the deep postural muscles by building strength from the inside out, re-balancing the body and finding correct alignment. It can help to tone the body and improve posture, achieving a balance between strength and flexibility. It is also a way of relieving unwanted stress and tension by focusing the mind.

Pilates offers both physical and mental training, encouraging you to be in control of your body. By improving body awareness and focus, tension is released from the body and correct alignment is taught.  Breathing into the lower ribcage is encouraged which gives a deep sense of relaxation as well as allowing more oxygen to enter the body. Precise, controlled, flowing movements mean that muscle and ligament damage sometimes associated with other fitness regimes is avoided.

Pilates builds strength without adding bulk, which is balanced with flexibility. The creation of girdle strength is a primary aim of Pilates, achieved by strengthening the core postural muscles that stabilise the torso.
